Every Tuesday night Gavin Moore hosts the city sessions at the Woodford on Paul St. Gavin is an accomplished singer/songwriter in his own right, as well as belonging to a famous extended family including Christy Moore and Luka Bloom.

Each week starting at about 9pm guest musicians perform mostly acoustic solo sets, and usually conclude the night with a few collaborative numbers. The atmosphere is quite intimate yet laid back; the audience often subdued at first but more enthusiastic as the evening wears on (and the drinks are racked up).

My only complaint is the interference from noisy revellers in the other end of the bar when there’s a football match on TV. I’m not against watching football in pubs, but it’s a shame the management don’t switch off the TVs for a few hours on the one night every week that there are musicians performing live in the bar. Now that the Champions League has concluded we can hope for a short period of respite before the onset of the world cup!

The City Sessions is a great addition to the live music circuit in Cork, and having been running since February (I think?) it is quickly becoming a very popular — and did I mention free — weekly event. Get in early to grab good seats!
