LAUGHTER RESOUNDS LEESIDE FOR CORK’S FIRST COMEDY FESTIVAL FROM 27th- 29th JULY 2007

The public will be entertained by a broad range of comedic talent at the first Cork Comedy Festival which will take place at different venues across the city of Cork over the weekend of Friday, 27th – Sunday, 29th July. Through the inauguration of this festival, Director, Dave Dineen, sets out to present humour in many different contexts and to have people question their perception of humour as something that can only be packaged as a commodity. Dave hopes that this festival over time will attempt to balance the lopsided view of Irish comedy.

Among the top international acts on the Cork Comedy Festival programme will be Glaswegian Jerry Sadowitz who has a well-deserved reputation as the bad boy of comedy for his jaw dropping irreverence ; Steve day, one of Britain’s hottest young stand-up stars and Kevin mcaleer - the Irishman who will have you eating out of the back of his hand solely for those who likes comedy rare and original.
Other highlights in the festival will be new English talent, Laurence Clark who has cerebral palsy and whose outlook on life as a disabled person shapes his comedy; the gifted comedic group Abnormally Funny People, who are a variety of disabled comedians and a token non-disabled stand-up who present a show intended to make us laugh and think at the same time. Their observational material overturns all sorts of stereotypes about the disabled but their main objective is to raise laughter, not to sermonise.

The best of International comedic talent will also feature on the Cork programme including Ed Byrne, whose line is it ? and Padraig Hyland, Tanylee davis as well as the fabulous Dublin based burlesque troupe the Pink Panty’s.

Cork Comedy Festival will embrace the community and give Cork a dose of humour never seen before in the People’s Republic! The festival will provide educational workshops for aspiring comedians who want to learn about stand up comedy, clowning and Commedia Dell’ Arte. Bull Comedy, Theatre Commedia Dell’Arte and Snatch Comedy will give participants expert advice on their unique approaches to writing and performing for comedy.

During the festival, venues in Cork will be filled with the cream of the crop of international, national and local comedic talent. The festival comedy club The Laughing Ass will open all weekend and offer a diverse programme of events throughout the three days of the festival. There will be a Comedy Pub trail in all major pubs in the city. Some of the city’s well-known late night venues will be holding unique events over the weekend featuring burlesque shows, Commedia Dell’Arte, late night comedy and stand up entertainment.

.

Another strand to this first ever Cork Comedy Festival will be the Healing Through Humour conference with guest speaker Dr. Patch Adams. This is aimed primarily at medical and caring professionals and will debate and discuss the importance of humour in everyday life. Some of the main conference themes will include humanitarian clowning, social activism in the area of medical health and thinking outside the box healthcare system design. The conference will be held in the Silver Springs Moran Hotel, Cork on Friday, 27th and Saturday 28th July.

Cork Comedy Festival will finally put Cork on the map as a city that embraces the festival like a long lost brother!
