Last December I drove down to Dingle to see Elbow perform in St. James’ Church for the recording of RTE’s Other Voices series 4. The experience surpassed my high expectations. The other acts performing on the night (Miriam Ingram, Claire Sproule and Stephen Fretwell) I knew little about, but was suitably impressed by their rousing performances. Elbow put on a great show, having fun with the small audience and treating us to stirring renditions of songs from their new album, concluding with the sublime ‘Great Expectations.’
Watch it here: http://www.rte.ie/tv/othervoices/elbow.html
Thanks to Other Voices you can end up strolling the streets of Dingle and bumping into these bands outside or in the pub; the atmosphere seems to affect the performers and dismantle any air of celebrity they might have. In hindsight I only wish I had seen more of the performances, and stayed for more of the craic… especially having heard of some of the sessions that ensued. It also serves as a way of discovering new artists - I had paid little attention to Duke Special until I saw him on TV when I tuned in to see Elbow several weeks later, and what a revelation he was. You can watch his set via the Other Voices website or there’s always youtube.
Tickets for this year’s series of recorded performances in Dingle go on sale this morning at 9am. A new system is in place this year, whereby tickets can be bought on www.tickets.ie in advance of the actual line-up being announced. I’m not sure if I’m willing to shell out the money for tickets for a particular night before finding out who’s playing. It’s probably safest to get in there early for tickets though, and there’ll probably be some way of trading or swapping tickets with others once the schedule is made public.
Could anyone tell me if RTE or Hummingbird ever released a cd or dvd from other voices 4? I was waiting patiently for it but never heard anything.
Anyway, here’s the press release in full:
RTÉ Two and Hummingbird Productions Present Two Sounds: Other Voices 5
Presented by John Kelly and filmed in Dingle, County Kerry from the 1st –
5th December
Over the last four years a very lucky group of people have seen James Blunt
singing “You’re Beautiful” in the unique setting of a 200 year old church,
watched The Waterboys as they strolled down Dingle’s Main Street for a chat
in Ashes Bar, hung out with The Frames in MacCarthys, or caught up with The
Thrills as they had a pint in Benners. You too could be in the audience in
St James’ Church, Dingle as RTÉ Two Sounds and Hummingbird Productions
present Other Voices 5.
The Dingle recording of Two Sounds: Other Voices has become a music festival

expression resulting in an aural and visual feast for the viewer and

Hosted by music and arts radio and TV presenter John Kelly, the fifth series
of ‘Other Voices’ will be filmed in front of a small audience and will
feature four acts per night over the five nights of this very special
