Can google make this site obsolete?

Since this website was started, I’ve noticed hundreds of other informal events listings that use various user-friendly web publishing media; blogs, bulletin boards, yahoo or msn groups etc. In some cases it works, in others it doesn’t, but it’s a handy way to collaborate and share the effort of updating and maintaining the listing. Ideally anyone could add or change events in the listing and keep it up-to-date, but realistically, with spam and vandals some form of moderation will always be necessary.

Now it appears Google are encouraging people to make use of Google Calendar for this and other purposes. You need a (free) google account to use the service, and you can share your calendar with nominated individuals. A sample is given here:

With a bit of effort it could render corkgigs.com useless!

Read more about it here on the official Google blog:

I can see a lot of potential in Google Spreadsheets to be another very handy tool for collaboration on any kind of project where the people involved are geographically scattered. I don’t think it should be viewed as a competitor, more like a collaborator. If you could add events to your google calendar at the click of a button from corkgigs.com it would keep people coming back for more all the time. It would be nice to somehow be able to mark gigs that you notice and have a reminder set up instead of relying on remembering it, cos the memory ain’t what it used to be! I think google calendars could do just that.
