The venue formerly known as An Phoenix has been transformed into a blues bar by the proprietors of the neighbouring Taste café on Union Quay.

About Beale Street
One of the most well known streets in the world, Beale Street, in downtown Memphis is lined with some of the best blues joints, bars, café’s, and restaurants in the U.S. The Gibson guitar factory is situated on the next street.
The Blues were born on Beale Street, and it was the home to famous blues musicians such as W.C. Handy who wrote the first blues song there in 1909.
Other great Blues men followed Handy’s steps; Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Alberta Hunter, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Memphis Minnie McCoy, and in the 1940’s Riley “Blues Boy” King, whose stage name would come to be known as B.B. King.
A little piece of Beale Street has come to Cork, well to be precise, Union Quay. Klaas and Annet Spijker moved to Cork from Holland 3 years ago and opened “Taste Café”. The café is dedicated to the memory of our very own great blues man, Rory Gallagher.
They are now opening “BealeStreet Blues and Rock Bar” next to the café on Fri 28th April.
Formally know as the Phoenix, their aim is to bring the blues to a wider audience with live music. Bands in Ireland, UK, Holland, Germany, USA, etc have been contacted and will play at the bar in due course. Ireland is producing some fine young musicians and Klaas would like to encourage young people to listen to and even play the blues.
There will also be afternoon sessions, to cater for the even younger fan. Electric and acoustic jams will also be held in BealeStreet. Music dvd’s of the great blues and rock artist’s will be shown.
All in all a blues bar to enjoy a few jars and listen to some good music.
